Pests of Pear

Pear is the most important crop after Apple.There are several insects that affect pear production.For the protection of this crop, proper identification and management of pests should be done.

Major pests of Pear are:-

1.Stem borer: Sahydrassus (=Phassus) malabaricus

Symptoms of damage:

  • Borehole at the base of the stem with circular particle mat covering
  • Wilting of the tree.

Identification of pest:

  • Larva – Stout caterpillar.
  • Adult – Big, brownish white moth.

Management:

  • Remove and destroy damaged branches and tree
  • Use light trap 1/ha to attract and kill the adults
  • Iron hooking – locate the borehole and kill the grub
  • Drench the stem with Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2.5 litres in 250 litres of water (during   February- March and September- October)

 

2.Aphid: Dilachnus krishn

Symptoms of damage:

  • Yellowing of tender shoots

Management:

  • Spray dimethoate 0.03% or methyl demeton 0.025% or phosphamidon 0.025%
  • Conserve natural enemies like coccinellid beetles
